The Chasm Within!
What is a chasm? It’s a deep crack in the earth, a gulf, or an abyss that’s impossible to cross. In this parable, there are actually two chasms, one in the afterlife and another that separates Lazarus from the wealthy man. Both seem insurmountable! Lazarus can’t change his situation, and even if he could, the rich man would likely dismiss him. The rich man can bridge the gap if he chooses, but he opts not to.  He is aware of Lazarus's presence and even knows his name, yet he refuses to help. Instead, he still sees Lazarus as someone to exploit, a servant to bring him water even after death.
Friends, God forbid we become like the rich man in this parable. This story encourages us to examine our hearts and identify the areas in our lives that need improvement. That’s a serious question we need to consider and bring to Jesus for His help. Only Jesus can bridge the gap between God's holiness and our hardened hearts. He sacrificed His life to remake our hearts, to cleanse us, forgive us, and give us hearts of flesh to love God and serve others. Take a heart exam today! Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes and reveal the chasms around you. Pray for the Lord to create a new heart within you, so you can help others cross the great Chasm with humility and love.
Onward and Upward+
