Take Refuge
Is there some fear in your life today that you're just not ready to face? David had no fear of being honest. He faced life with a boldness that allowed him to vent his feelings, state his fears, express his desires and always claim God’s promises. “Keep me safe, O God!” is the way David begins Psalm 16. He then immediately states that he, at that moment in his life and without hesitation or doubt, came to Him for help, “for I have come to you for refuge.” He didn’t say that he had taken refuge in God in the past or that he planned on taking refuge in God in the future. Something was obviously threatening or challenging him at that very moment and, in trust, David immediately went to God for help.
Unfortunately, we often hesitate to go to the Lord with our needs. We tend to believe we are capable of handling our fears and failures by ourselves. We often think we can cover up our mistakes and faults. But there is nothing in us, about us or that has come from us, that is beyond God’s love, mercy and power. He always understands what we are going through and is eagerly awaiting our call for help. The word “keep” in this psalm could be interpreted as to watch over, much like a shepherd watching over his flock. David knew the job of a shepherd first-hand. He knew if anything happened to the sheep, the shepherd would be held accountable. David also knew, as a king, that he was responsible and accountable. He knew who to trust and more importantly, whom to call on for help. Friends, if you are struggling with a decision, circumstance or situation today, then don’t delay. Like David, call upon the Lord and take refuge in His presence, place your trust in His protection and boldly claim His promises.
Grace and peace always,
Fr. Greg+
