Our Faith Family
The need to belong and be part of a community has probably never been more important than now after months of isolation and social separation. Being disconnected from our biological or church families has taken a heavy toll on us all. A person may have many acquaintances and be involved in a number of organizations and activities, but that’s not the same as the feeling of belonging.
Long ago Jesus redefined God’s new family plan when He said “Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother (Mark 3:35).” Later Saint Paul, would assure the early Christians in Ephesus that being “in Christ” through faith made them part of the family of God’s people and His household. The same is true for us today. Today God’s household is the church, our faith family. Everyone who is a follower of Jesus needs to find a home and a church family with other faithful believers. That’s not always easy. There may have been times or even right now, when you have felt isolated, like a foreigner or a stranger. Perhaps the church you are now attending has not been as welcoming as you would have liked. You may even be tempted to give up on it. But being among God’s family is His will and gift to you. Being an active part of a church family is a crucial part of our discipleship. Once we do find our place in God’s family, we likewise need to become ambassadors of Christ to welcome others. Brothers and sisters, the benefit of belonging in God’s family and being in His household is a two-way street. Not only are we blessed, but we are called to actively welcome others. Friends, it’s only by giving the gift away that we are able to keep it and grow our faith family.
Grace and peace always,
Fr. Greg+
