Give me a sign!
In the sixth chapter of the book of Judges, after an angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, we find this well-known conversation of conflicting emotions and actions between Gideon and God. Many who have been called by the Lord have often experienced similar exchanges. At first, we see doubt and unbelief in his ability to do what God has asked him to do. He even asks God to prove He is really talking to him. Then we see him demonstrate faith, trust and divine wisdom. Once he recognizes God’s voice, he begs the Lord to wait while he goes and prepares an offering. Gideon knew he shouldn’t come before God empty-handed; he knew that in order to receive God’s favor, he must first give, to receive.
Unfortunately, Gideon like so many, continued to doubt and test God, asking for proof that He would honor His promises. God, in His unfailing love and mercy, was patient and tolerated his doubt and unbelief. But eventually, God decided it was time for Gideon to take a leap of faith and trust Him completely. God instructed Gideon to send 30,000 of his troops back home. He was left with only 300 men to fight the enemy. Scripture tells us, with God’s help, Gideon defeated the enemy and God blessed him for his faithful obedience. Dear friends, is God calling you to trust in His promises in some area of your life today? Are you struggling with doubt, fear and unbelief? Are you demanding God to give you proof that He will honor His promises? Well, if so, I encourage you to offer a sacrifice. Lay your pride, your doubt, and your fear at God’s feet. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. Then be prepared to watch as God joins you and uses you to accomplish exceedingly more than you could ask for or expect.
Grace and peace always,
Fr. Greg+
