Sowing, Weeding, and Reaping
As a gardening enthusiast, I find weeding my least favorite chore. I know weeds can quickly overrun and damage the garden, so I weed to protect it and help it flourish. Early in the season, I cultivate around young plants and remove weeds by picking and pulling them up. Despite my best efforts, I sometimes accidentally pull up healthy plants along with the weeds. At such moments, I see the divine wisdom in Jesus' Kingdom Parable about the gardener. However, there are differences between the weeds in my garden and those in this parable.
The weeds in this parable were deliberately planted by the enemy. Initially, they closely resembled the wheat, and their roots would quickly entangle before anyone realized the sabotage. Removing the weeds too early would have damaged the good plants. Not weeding at that moment was wise. This parable also teaches us about God’s wisdom and mercy in our lives. Since the fall, the devil has been actively sowing weeds among God's good seeds. We might wonder why God doesn’t just eliminate wickedness and evil from the world, but we can be thankful that He is faithful to preserve His people until the harvest. When Jesus does return, He will gather the wheat into His barn and burn the chaff with unquenchable fire.
